Do You Need To Study Spirituality To Become A Great Leader

When you think that you can exist even without your body, you become spiritual.

People who deal with spiritual knowledge like spiritual healing, spiritual awakening make a great business out of their spiritual knowledge but someone who has great spiritual knowledge cannot apply for an employment based on this qualification.

Spiritual knowledge has a long way to go before it gets approved to get included in the mainstream school and college curriculums.

Lately, schools and colleges have realized the importance of including the ‘Soft skills’ or ‘Inter-personal skills’ as a subject in their curriculums. Medical council of India in its ‘Vision 2015’ document conveyed the importance of training doctors in communication skills. Imagine a doctor who is very talented in carrying out operations but has poor communication skills. What kind of havoc it can create when the doctor has completed the operation successfully but does not communicate clearly to the kins of the patient about his survival chances!

We are still evolving as a human society when it comes to empathy and compassion. People who display high level of empathy and compassion for the environment are considered not less than celebrities, as they are thought to be very special human beings. You might have seen people who spit and litter in the open without thinking of the consequences that it can have on others, so in comparison to them if someone displays empathy and compassion for the environment will certainly be treated like a ‘Celebrity’.

There is a very famous saying that ‘People do not leave their jobs but their bosses’. This is applicable to everybody in every part of the world. A boss is someone who is supposed to manage people and sort out the differences but how can one manage people when he is not able to manage his own emotions. Most of the companies nowadays, promote those employees who have the required work experience and hold a management degree in order to be promoted to a managerial position, then why a junior employee leaves a job only because he was afraid of the actions of his boss. When the boss has a management degree, then hasn’t he studied that how he needs to manage himself first and then manage others like his team members?

In this data age, it is no more a challenge for anybody to seek the required information that fuels his passion and turn that passion into a livelihood either though employment or self-employment. In this age, it will be no more a surprise when a junior employee or a fresher leaves a job just because his boss shouted at him. So it is increasingly important that someone who is promoted to the managerial position, manages himself properly first and then enhances his management capability to manage others.

The idea of including subjects on ‘Soft skills’ or ‘Inter-personal skills’ in the mainstream courses in schools and colleges can help students significantly to enhance their skills to deal with others but we need to introspect that, will these subjects on ‘Soft skills’ or ‘Inter-personal skills’ be enough to change the students’ attitude which will help them in their future personal and professional roles.

It is very interesting to note that anti-social elements like pick-pockets also get adequate training on ‘Inter-personal skills’ to divert their victim’s attention in order to execute their plan flawlessly.

So that can make you conclude that one can learn inter-personal skills to deal with people superficially and deceive them to work towards his own goals.

Imagine a situation that everyone in this world tries to deceive others to achieve his own goals, then where it would lead us to? It has never happened and will never happen because there have always been and there will always be some leaders in every field like ‘Corporates’, ‘Politics’ and ‘Spirituality’ who deal with people selflessly and with the only intention that their deeds should result in the overall benefit of the human society. This kind of leaders who work for the benefit of others, possess spirituality with or without their knowledge because when you think that your existence does not depend on your physical body and you need not necessarily work only towards the achievement of the materialistic goals of your body , you become spiritual. Glorious example of such type of leaders is Mahatma Gandhi who spearheaded the Indian freedom movement with the only intention that every Indian should be able to live in a country which is not ruled by a foreign country, never strived to assume any power in free India.

Therefore, if spirituality can make a person so selfless and help him to work for the benefit of others then don’t you think that we need to study spirituality in addition to inter-personal skills in our schools and colleges, so that these educational institutions build leaders with great inter-personal skills and spirituality who build great teams, organizations and nations with the intention of serving the human society!
